Pataleshwar Cave Temple Pune

The Pataleshwar Cave Temples is dedicated to Lord Pataleshwar- the God of Underwater and Lord Shiva.

This temple was built in the 8th century. The temple, made of basalt rock, is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. This temple is dedicated to Lord Pataleshwar. The caves of this temple are very similar to the Elephanta and Ellora caves. The entire structure is carved out of black rock. Enter the gate on the both sides there is a park. At the end of the park, there are the stairs to go down and one gets to see the huge circular umbrella shaped structure known as Nandi Mandapa which is supported by stone pillars. This mandapa is one of the peculiar structures of Pataleshwar Caves Pune.

The main cave is rectangular on plan and has a pillared porch. There are three sanctums in the cave temple and the central one houses the Shivalinga.
